Within Cheddar Valley U3A there are three special-interest groups dedicated to history.
HISTORY GROUP
The History Group meets monthly and informally. The approach is unstructured and thematic and emphasizes the continuum of history and the need to understand the past to inform the present. We are concerned mainly with Western civilizations and members are encouraged to research the evidence, particularly relating to national people and events.
INDUSTRIAL HISTORY
The Industrial History Group organises site visits to places of appropriate interest, while its indoor meetings feature talks on particular aspects of Industrial History.
GREAT LIVES
Great Lives Group is almost 4 years old. We are a discussion group who discuss “Great Lives” the people who have featured in the Radio Four programme of the same name. We choose a different programme each month, from a back catalogue of hundreds available, listen to it at home beforehand, then try and reach a conclusion. The discussion is lively, especially since we have got to know each other better and are not afraid to speak our minds. In the past we’ve discussed lives as diverse as Margot Fonteyn and Spike Milligan, Beatrice Potter and Octavia Hill, Josiah Wedgewood and Steve Jobs. If you like the sound of the group why not come along to one of our meetings? We meet on the 4th Tuesday afternoon each month, currently in each other’s homes but if we get too big we’ll go back to a hall. Ring me if you’d like more details. The phone number is in the latest news bulletin.
