Holiday 2025
This holiday was to Norwich, Norfolk, in East Anglia. We travelled across country to get there, of course. But all of the motorways go to London! So that is the route that we had to take. As usual, Baker Dolphin's driver did a wonderful job of getting us there without stress. Stopping for refreshments and comfort breaks just at the right times. The city of Norwich has lots of history, and we were regaled with comments about the way of life for the population, old and new; not just about football! Our visits during the holiday included Sandringham Estate and a boat trip on the Norfolk Broads, complete with commentary on many of the sights on view.
HOLIDAY 2024
The 2024 annual holiday by coach was to Chester in May. 47 of us left Cheddar on a fine Sunday morning for our 5-day holiday in Chester. We had a stop on the way up, to break our journey, at Wightwick Manor, a National Trust property situated near Wolverhampton. We then travelled on to our hotel in Chester, in time for our evening meal, and most of us needed a relatively early night after a busy day.
On Monday we visited Conwy with its interesting old castle remains. We then carried on to Llangollen to board a canal boat for a restful 2 hour trip (unfortunately in the rain, but we were inside and dry.) This included crossing the “stream in the sky,” the country’s biggest navigable aqueduct. After dinner on Tuesday evening Shirley tested our brains with some “fun” quizzes. On Tuesday we set off from the Hotel for the City of Liverpool, where we picked up a very amusing local guide for a tour around Liverpool, seeing all the points of interest, as well as information on the Beatles and other famous Merseyside musicians and entertainers. Following on from the tour we all found our way around this very historical City. On Tuesday evening we were treated to some competitive games of Bingo, courtesy of Roy and Shirley.
Wednesday morning saw us heading towards Port Sunlight, an amazing village built by William Hesketh Lever for his factory workers in the early 1900’s. The village was named after Sunlight Soap one of the famous brands. We were treated to a very informative talk on the history of the Village from a volunteer, and then had time to wander around and visit the Museum, one of the houses and the Art Gallery. We left Port Sunlight and headed back to Chester to spend an afternoon taking in the City Walls, Amphitheatre, River Dee, Cathedral and of course the famous 2 storey rows of shops. Our last evening was rounded off by a good old sing song. We have to thank Shirley for arranging the evening entertainment to keep us all amused.
Can it be Thursday already! Back on the coach on a beautiful morning to enjoy the last day of our holiday. We left Chester in glorious sunshine and headed to Llangollen to board a train for a very picturesque trip to Corwen, where our wonderful driver Gary was waiting for us to start the long journey home. At this point we hit the very worst weather of the week driving through some very serious rain. We had a lunch stop at Trentham, which is probably very nice in the sunshine, but definitely looked sad in the rain. As we continued our journey home the weather improved and we arrived back to Cheddar in sunshine, tired out, but I hope I speak for everyone when I say we had spent a few very enjoyable days together, and our thanks go to Shirley for organising the trip so efficiently and always being on hand to help when required.
Looking forward to holiday 2025.
Sylvia Hall on behalf of the Day Trippers Committee.
